His new project is all about going beyond physical appearances and attempting to render the interior world of a human being, through memories, emotions, relationships and personal story. All of it organised around a portrait painting metaphor: brushes loaded with meanings instead of paint would render a portrait using his new “generative video painting” technique. A technique that starts with collecting personal videos of the person portrayed, tagged by him/her with relevant concepts and descriptions. Very innovative to say the least! However, Facebook’s new approach is when you click a link to something a friend viewed on a particular site, before you can view it, you are invited to install an application which will subsequently share everything you view on that site with your friends without you being aware of it.

I first noticed this when I was suddenly seeing what many of my friends were listening to on Spotify, then what other friends were reading on The Guardian website. This feels a bit like listening to someone else’s music while they have headphones on, or reading someone else’s newspaper over their shoulder. Sure, I’m likely to find something interesting if my friend recommends it to me, but I’d rather they willingly told me than I came across it by doing what feels like stalking. This doesn’t feel natural, it’s rather creepy…

In this video, +Robert Scoble interviews Mike Kerns, who runs social and personalisation at +Yahoo! News, where they discuss the effects of integrating this new technology. Amongst a small group of adopters, Mike reports that Yahoo! has seen over 10 million new people joining in a very short amount of time, with a 600% increase in traffic from Facebook. They have seen a large demographic shift with the majority of new users under the age of 30.

The way in which people are entering into frictionless sharing has lead to widespread unease and suspicion amongst many Facebook users and the ‘Technorati’. I believe that the majority of sceptics are mature internet users (including myself), who grew up in the pre-omniprescent-internet era where every intimate detail of our lives wasn’t in the public arena. Some critics liken frictionless sharing to ‘malware’, as the majority of people will be unaware of the implications of installing the application and this feels like trickery.

Are we now on a path to sharing every action? Is this the set to become the way that we’ll be consuming and discovering media in the future? I’d love to hear your take on this topic…
